This month, McLaughlin Family Chiropractic turns 33, and 31 of those years have been right here in Walkersville.

When I brought my practice to Walkersville in 1995, I thought I knew what this job was. I'd been trained well. I knew the spine, the techniques, the science.

Turns out, I didn't know much at all. The real education started the day the first patient walked in, and it hasn't stopped since.

So to celebrate 33 years, here are 33 things I've actually learned. Not from a textbook. From you: the thousands of people who've trusted us with your backs, your necks, your golf games, and your grandkids.

  1. Most people don't come in because of their spine. They come in because of their life. The sleep they've lost. The garden they can't tend. The grandkids they can't pick up. The spine is just where the story shows up.

  2. Listening is the treatment nobody bills for, and it's the one that matters most.

  3. Pain is a terrible messenger. It usually shows up last and leaves first. "It stopped hurting" and "it's fixed" are two very different things.

  4. You don't just want temporary relief. You want answers. So that's what we promise: no cookie-cutter approach, no guessing.

  5. The patients who do best aren't the ones with the worst problems. They're the ones with the clearest plan.

  6. Hope is a treatment. I've watched it work a thousand times.

  7. Nobody ever regretted getting checked early. Plenty of people have regretted waiting.

  8. Kids are easier to fix than adults. Bring them in before they're 40.

  9. The body wants to heal. Our job is mostly to stop getting in its way.

  10. Sitting is the new lifting. Your desk is doing more damage than your job description says.

  11. "I can crack my own neck" is not the same thing. Please stop.

  12. The best adjustment in the world can't outdo a mattress you've had for 19 years.

  13. Progress isn't a straight line. Some weeks you'll feel worse before you feel better. That's not failure, that's healing.

  14. Consistency beats intensity. Three simple visits a week beat one heroic one.

  15. The people who keep up with the grandkids are the ones who kept showing up when they felt fine.

  16. Maintenance isn't a sales pitch. It's the difference between maintaining your car and rebuilding your engine.

  17. Insurance is a payment method, not a care plan. Your spine doesn't know what your policy covers.

  18. The scariest words in health care: "It'll probably go away on its own." Sometimes it does. Sometimes it becomes the reason you're reading this.

  19. Every patient who ever referred a friend changed two lives, not one. Thank you.

  20. The front desk is the heart of this practice. Natalie, Vita, and others have welcomed more people through these doors than I have.

  21. A handshake and a first name still matter more than any software. Though we do love our software too.

  22. Some of our favorite people are the ones we haven't seen in a while. Life gets busy. There's no guilt in coming back.

  23. The 30-year patient taught me more than any seminar.

  24. People don't remember what you said. They remember that you listened.

  25. Small towns talk. When you do right by one person in Walkersville, the whole town hears about it. That's the best marketing there is.

  26. Community isn't a strategy. That's the whole point. That's why we're spending our 33rd birthday collecting toiletries for students who need them with SHIP.

  27. The adjustment is 30 seconds. The trust takes years. Both matter.

  28. You can't shortcut healing. But you can always, always start it.

  29. Age is not a diagnosis. Our best movers are often our oldest patients.

  30. The question that changes everything isn't "what's wrong with you?" It's "what do you want to be able to do?"

  31. After 33 years, I still get a kick out of watching someone stand up straighter after their first adjustment. Every single time.

  32. I have the best job in the world. I get paid to watch people get their lives back.

  33. The next 33 years start today. And you're invited.

A note to everyone who's walked through our doors: thank you. You trusted a young doctor with a big dream, and you built this practice with us, one spine at a time.

If you're one of the ones we haven't seen in a while, come say hello. No lecture, no guilt. Just a conversation about where you are and where you want to be.

And if you've never been in? There's never been a better time. We listen, we give you answers, and we'll build you a plan to move and function better.

Here's to the next 33.
